📚🏘 Introducing the Santa Cruz YIMBY Book Club
We're putting together a book club focused on exploring housing and urbanist related literature. This is a great opportunity to build community while learning about different approaches to the housing crisis and how they apply to Santa Cruz. Please fill out this questionnaire if you are interested!
This month we'll be reading The Leftmost City by Richard Gendron. This book will be a great foundation for understanding the history of Santa Cruz politics before we jump into more housing and urbanist literature. Reading period: June 3 - July 15. Final book discussion date and time is TBD but will be the week of July 15 - 22. Let us know your interest in joining the book club and we will send info on how to get the book and submit discussion questions.
‼️❓‼️ Did They Really Do That?
On May 28th, the Santa Cruz City Council voted to downsize the Food Bin Project at 1130 Mission St. They eliminated 11 much-needed homes, including some that would be on Very Low Income. Their unanimously adopted resolution was a unnecessary way to deny housing. We expect more from electeds who say they are “pro-housing”, especially our endorsed candidates. Denying housing during a housing crisis is not acceptable. The project compiled with local and state laws. Their action is in violation of the Housing Accountability Act (HAA) and Density Bonus Law. The HAA prohibits the reduction of residential square footage, which includes amenities and makes the project less financially feasible, also an HAA violation. This is why state housing laws have been passing and still are needed.
